Dale was wrapping the big fish fillet in foil, preparing it to go into the oven when Al came up the stairs. “Hey,” Dale greeted Al. “Hi.” Al stood close to the center island watching. “Mind if I ask a question?” D “I began cooking with my mother. When I was still in high school I got a job at a restaurant and loved it. After that I went to school. I was still in school when my mom …died. I did all the cooking at home then.” Dale began preparing the baby carrots and zucchini. “Chrissie was still pretty young at the time and my dad was… well he was useless in the kitchen and he was so lost when Mom died.”
Dale looked up. “Sure.” “How long have you been cooking?” “I began cooking with my mother.
As stated above this is a story of Dale and Al. If I am being honest, and after all, I did receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review, this book was slow going for me. For me, there was no connection to the character’s. Perhaps it was the fact that this is an unedited unformatted ARC, but I felt that the writing or the story was choppy. The storyline of Al’s grandmother was a bit over the top, and I was hard pressed to believe a grown man was mislead and manipulated to the extent that Al was when he obviously had no underlying mental issues at hand to make him an easy target. Al was, after all, sheltered, so his inexperience in life and love is plausible, if not believable, and almost endearing. Dale, as an MC, was tolerable, with some Alpha tendencies and the protectiveness he had for Al was sweet. The two together though, was somewhat awkward, but again, Al does not know how to maneuver through the ins and outs of…well….life, without his grandmother breathing down his neck and controlling his every waking moment.
