Honestly, I was not entirely sure what to expect with this book. I know S.L stated it was not like her other books, but I thought well, that does not mean it’s not going to be as good as if not better than some of her other work.
The story itself interested me, because I am a lover of the friends to lovers genre. This particular story follows August and Fi, “The friends”. They have known each other for years, confide in each other about every single mind numbing thing. August is a writer, who writes under a female pen name in the romance genre. However, he himself is not in a relationship and has relationship/commitment phobias. Sure he sleeps with woman, but wants nothing more….and I liked August, I liked his POV for the most part. So the story goes along each living their life as they have and do, then August realizes he has feelings for Fi as “more than friends”. He puts it all out there, but it does not necessarily work out the way he hopes.
Sometimes, in a book, the main female lead, either does not click with me, or for whatever reason, I find her to be annoying. It has only happened a few times, and this was one of those times. From the first interaction with Fi in the diner when she was describing her sexual encounter with Joshua, I was just annoyed with her. I could not find it in myself from that point to actually care about her as a person. Perhaps that is why the story just fell flat for me, I don’t know. But at this time, the story just never really clicked for me. And I hate that, because I truly wanted to love it.
The good points about this book are this. The premise is good, the theory of the story is great. SL’s writing was great and I am not sure I encountered any major or minor grammatical errors.
Overall, since this book was just ok for me because I neither loved nor hated it, I gave it 3 Stars.
